How can we help?

Quick fixes for the most common questions. Still stuck? Email us and a person answers, usually within one business day.

Common fixes

The shortcut does nothing
  1. Check the tray icon next to the clock: if Koltype is paused, open it and choose Resume.
  2. Another app may use Ctrl + Win. Open Koltype, Settings, General, and add a different shortcut.
  3. In an app running as administrator, Windows blocks other apps from typing. Run Koltype as administrator too, or use a normal window.
My microphone is not picked up
  1. Open Koltype, Settings, General, Microphone, pick your microphone and press Test. The meter should move.
  2. In Windows Settings, Privacy and security, Microphone, make sure desktop apps may use the microphone.
  3. Bluetooth headsets: choose the headset's microphone, not the speakers only.
The text does not appear
  1. Click into a text field before you talk; the text goes where the cursor is.
  2. Some apps block pasting. In Settings, System, set Inserting text to Type.
  3. With History on (the default), the text is kept: open Koltype, Home, History, and copy it from there.
It says my minutes are used up
  1. Free: you have 600 minutes a month on your computer. They start again on the first day of the next month. Upgrade on the pricing page to keep going now.
  2. Pro: when your 600 cloud minutes are used up, extra minutes may be off or at your cap. Koltype then keeps working on your computer. Change the setting on your account page.
  3. Recordings made meanwhile wait in History; press Transcribe again later.
The free cloud trial is not available

The 30-minute trial can be used once per person, per email address and per computer. If this computer or address already used it, the trial does not appear. Dictation on your computer still works, and Pro adds Koltype Cloud.

Koltype asks me to go online

Koltype checks your plan online at least once every 14 days, also when it transcribes on your computer. Connect to the internet for a moment and it carries on.

One of my computers was signed out

An account can be signed in on up to 3 computers. Signing in on a fourth signs out the one used least recently. Sign in again on the computer you need, or sign an old one out on your account page first.

Windows says it protected my PC

That is SmartScreen, shown for new apps from small publishers. Choose More info, then Run anyway. The download page shows it step by step.

Sign-in keeps asking me again
  1. Finish the sign-in in the browser window Koltype opens, then return to the app.
  2. If you signed this computer out on the website, sign in again from Koltype, Settings, Account.
  3. Corporate firewalls can block the app from reaching koltype.com. Ask IT to allow it.
Billing, refunds and invoices

Your account page opens Paddle's billing page, where you can change your card, download invoices or cancel. Paddle is our merchant of record. For a refund of a first purchase within 14 days, write to support@koltype.com.

Plans at a glance

  • Free: 600 minutes a month on your computer, and a one-time 30-minute Koltype Cloud trial.
  • Pro: $9.90 a month plus tax where it applies: 600 Koltype Cloud minutes a month, unlimited on your computer, extra cloud minutes at $0.02 each, only if you turn them on, up to the monthly cap you pick ($0, $5, $10, $20 or $50).
  • Up to 3 computers per account. Windows 10 and 11 only. The app is in 13 languages.

When you write, the log file helps: in Koltype open Settings, Data and privacy, Open the log folder, and attach koltype.log. It contains no transcripts.
